Prima Barista Bash 001
- Barista Competition Routine by Chris Deferio of The Coffee Institute
- Chris has been a finalist in the United States Barista Championships, won and served as a judge in the Millrock Free Pour Latte Art Championship, and is currently Training Director at The Coffee Institute in Muncie, Indiana. Chris will be sharing the routine he's using in regional and, hopefully, national competition this year as a way of showcasing to us his skillful presentation of specialty coffee. He's also a really nice guy who isn't afraid to walk around the shady parts of Seattle, just to hang with coffee people.
- Hario Products
- The coffee world has become quite enamored with Hario in the past year or so, particularly with their hand mills and V60 pour-over style of brewer. We'll have plenty of these products on display for all of you to inspect, up close and in person, ready for you to purchase if you so desire.
- Brewing Demos
- What, you think we'd just show you the goods without serving some up, too? No, sir! We'll be pouring brews using the V60, pulling shots with the paddle-group Linea, and generally creating all sorts of coffee deliciousness. All for you to consume. For free.
- Latte Art Contest judged by Chris Deferio, Jesse Harriott, and Ryan Soeder
- Details:
- Due to time constraints we are limiting the number of contestants to 24. It will be FIRST COME FIRST SERVE, so if you want to compete make sure you show up early.
- It's going to be single elimination head-to-head tournament style.
- You can bring your own mugs and pitchers.
- There will be prizes for 1st and 2nd place.
- It's FREE to compete.
- Judges:
- You already know about some of Chris Deferio's credentials, the likes of which are much longer than we have listed above. Jesse Harriott is a close friend of Mr. Deferio, having known and worked together during their days in New York. Jesse's coffee skills are many, and he's an extremely under-appreciated gem of Louisville's coffee community. Rumor has it that he's working on a special little espresso blend just for use at the Bash. Ryan Soeder is a new addition to the judges table having recently taken 3rd place at the Millrock Free Pour Latte Art Contest in NY/NJ.

For most companies it's hard to find motivation for pushing out new products if you find yourself on top already. This is not, however, the case with La Marzocco. The Italian based espresso machine manufacturer continues to push the envelop when it comes to innovations in espresso machine technology. The newest line from La Marzocco continues their progression in the specific areas of temperature stability and pressure profiling. We've discussed the Strada Electronic Paddle version in detail in our Strada EP blog post and listing for the 2 Group Strada EP. The Strada Mechanical Paddle employs technology similar to the Mechanical Paddles on other La Marzocco models but with a few new features including individual pressure gauges, digital PID control, and dedicated group boilers.

As the interest in specialty coffee continues to increase, so does the interest in brewing methods that best compliment the quality and ideals of specialty coffee. Up until this point there have been limited options when it comes to pour over brewing devices that offer both a small learning curve as well as excellent results. Garnering praise for both their calculated design and ease of use, the Kalita line of pour over brewers are helping that small list of brewers grow. The Kalita Wave Dripper is being offered in both small (1-2 people) and large (1-4 people). The small size is offered in both glass and stainless steel while the large size is offered in glass, stainless steel, and ceramic. For an overview of the unique style the Kalita Wave Dripper brings to the pour over method, a feature chart that overviews the design, technique, and advantage can be found below.
