The Freehand Tiger Paw Smooth Briar Espresso Tamper is special even among the Cavendish Series. The block for this tamper was cut from the edge of the Briar burl so one side retained the original bark texture. The asymmetric shape developed as I kept that natural rough surface, which is reminiscent of pipes carved in the freehand tradition. This shape was formed with a series of panels that transition to a round neck at the base. The light color, striped markings and fistlike shape reminded me of a tiger paw and together with the freehand style, helped name the tamper. The Tiger Paw has a great deal of variety in the grain; I love the parallel and flame grain on the sides. The odd shape fits very well into the hand and the slightly angled head offers a comfortable place for the fingers to rest giving you a great grip on the tool. These attributes make it a useful instrument as well as a fascinating ornament in the shop.
