The Yama Syphon Brewer is a modern version of an old coffee brewer design. The process is simple and elegant, but the final product is outstanding. Simply pour 21 oz. of water into the bottom glass and heat it over a butane burner until it slowly begins to boil (the Syphon is also available with a denatured alcohol burner). If it is heating too fast and boiling rapidly, monitor the heat source to ensure a slower boil. At this point, the water will rise into the upper glass and saturate the waiting grounds. Some even recommend waiting until about 1/2 - 3/4 of the water has risen to the upper glass to dump the grounds into the top glass. Once every last drop of flavor has been extracted from the ground beans (will take approximately 2 minutes depending upon desired strength), remove the flame and gravity will draw the coffee down through the tube (and filter) into the lower glass. To serve, remove the upper glass and use the built in handle to pour a fantastic cup of coffee.

The benefits of this system are that the water heats to the perfect brewing temperature, and that complete control over the process can be maintained at all times. Simply remove the heat source when you want saturation to be complete!

Yama has specialized in hand-blown glass brewing equipment since 1978 and they've become known for their coffee siphons and cold brew towers. The siphon brewer utilizes a heat source to boil water and push it into an upper brewing chamber, then sucks the coffee down through a cloth filter and back into the bottom chamber. Hands down, it's the most involved and captivating way of making coffee. Similar to the siphon, Yama's cold coffee dripper looks more like lab equipment than a coffee maker. It uses a slow dripping process to brew a strong concoction of coffee that's destined to be served over ice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing control! I bought this after using (very briefly) a denatured alcohol burner before realizing it's either on or off. No in between. And because of that, you end up cooking the coffee and burning it since you have no heat regulation during your brew time. You'll taste this awful burnt peanut flavor in your brews. No better upgrade than this beautiful butane burner. Easy to use, fantastic heat control at the turn of a knob, and excellent quality build. Simple to fill, and definitely no other way to go than the butane burner. The denatured alcohol is unfortunately useless to creating a wonderful cup of coffee. And the shipping was 2 day mail, crazy fast!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Game Changer I've been using the alcohol burner my siphon came with for the last year... Super inconsistent, lots of jetting, etc... Just awful! As soon as I used the butane burner for the first time, I knew everything was well in the world. The adjustable flame allows you to adjust for temp/jetting at the beginning and throughout your brew. Plus, it's a clean and simple-looking device to compliment the rest of the siphon. This is the most important piece brewing with a siphon and getting consistent results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Controlled Heat Loving life with the Yama BN-1 burner. I can brew with my new Hario TCA-3 out on the back deck while my Lab enjoys life in the yard. Great flame control and simple sure start. Love it. Good build quality and a great match to the Hario. My favorite coffee brewing system. Can even use it while stargazing in the field.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great!!! I got this with the 5 cup siphon for my parents when I got married and they love it. I have had the coffee from this and it is very smooth, no bitterness. They said that there is a clip on the bottom that you need to attach to make sure that the filter stays in place. I love watch this thing make coffee.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful burner I'm very new to siphon coffee brewing, but I decided to go with a butane burner instead of an alcohol one. The Yama butane burner is incredibly sleek and easy to use. The knob allows me to control the rate of heating perfectly. It's also very hot and speedy for my brewer. Couldn't be happier with it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Solid body + flimsy plastic ignitor handle= broken I really want to give this burner a good review, the body is rock solid, built like a tank. But the long extended ignitor button is cheap plastic and too long. I'm not accident prone at all, and I baby my coffee gear and any other items I consider important. But this burner was broken in less than 7 hours after I received it (and it's entirely my fault), but if the ignitor was smaller or made of the same quality of build as the body, it wouldn't be broken. The whole siphon setup got bumped moving a frame (ironically setting up for a photoshoot) and knocked to the carpeted floor 4 feet below. The handle snapped off like a twig, deep inside the body. Personally, I'd likely be happier if this unit was sold without an ignitor at all. I have a lighter, and the lighter will likely outlast the ignitor used in these models, and it would be one less thing to break. All in all, it's a loud burner, but it works well. It just needs either a smaller metal ignitor, or none at all. This one is way too easy to break off.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality butane burner I've tried several adjustable butane burners with mixed results. You generally get what you pay for. Considering the build quality, this burner is a bargain. Good flame height and distribution, excellent adjustability. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Burner Works great. Lights on first click and heats my siphon quickly. Just a bit tricky filling the butane but I'll attribute that to my inexperience. Excellent build quality.

How do you refill the butane burner?

Asked by: Amander
You'l need to purchase any standard can of butane (like Zippo) then fill the burner via the valve on the underside of the unit.
