SKU: 3 Cup Chemex

We apologize for any inconvenience, but we are currently out of stock of the 3 cup wood collar Chemex (CM-1C). Only the glass handle model is available at this time.

The Chemex coffee brewer is part science, part work of art. Invented by Dr. Peter Schlumbohm in 1941, the Chemex is an iconic part of coffee brewing history and art history, being feature in the Museum of Modern Art's collection since 1944. The Chemex was designed to allow for a pure brewing experience, having the coffee only come in contact with non-porous, borosilicate glass and the specially designed filters. Overall a simple, beautiful, brewer that makes great coffee.

  • Brewing on the Chemex is simple: open the filters so that the three sided section of the filter is facing the spout, add ground coffee, and pour your desired volume of hot water over the coffee.
  • This hourglass shaped flask is made entirely of glass, a chemically inert material that does not absorb odors or chemical residues.
  • Capacity: 3 cup (1 pint/16ozs.)
  • Two models: Glass Handle or Wood Collar with leather tie. (select from options above)
  • Has no moving parts and will work forever, unless it is dropped or in some other way destroyed.
  • Also available in 10 cup, 8 cup, and 6 cup volumes.

Chemex

The Chemex® coffeemaker was invented by chemist Peter J. Schlumbohm, Ph.D., in 1941. Being a doctor of Chemistry, he was very familiar with laboratory apparati and the methods of filtration and extraction. He applied this knowledge when designing his coffeemaker by modifying the laboratory funnel, adding an "air channel" and a pouring spout. He added the "air channel" so the air displaced by the liquid dripping into the vessel could easily escape past the laboratory filter paper. Over the years, these items have been recognized as outstanding examples of American Design. In 1956, the Chemex coffee maker was selected by the Illinois Institute of Technology as one of the best-designed items of modern times, the only coffee brewer chosen for the award. The coffee maker and the water kettle are in the permanent collections of museums such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Smithsonian, the Philadelphia Museum and the Corning Museum located in Corning, NY. When it comes to exceptionally tasting coffee made from a simple but elegant process, the Chemex has no rival.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Live up to its promise! My coffeemaker and filters arrived yesterday and I had my first cup this morning, following the instructions for brewing which accompanied it. Both products performed as promised and my coffee tasted wonderful. No bitterness! I'm glad I bought Chemex.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good, but too small... I got my 3-cup Chemex this week and quickly discovered I drink more coffee than the 3-cup can deliver in one pour. Not a huge deal, but in hindsight I think the 6-cup would offer more versatility. Since I have a Zojirushi electric water boiler I don't need to heat water in a kettle on the stove and I've just been using a glass measuring cup to pour over. As the opening of the 3-cup isn't very large, it is a lot more difficult to control the pour. After a few tries, I think I've mastered it without having to invest in a thin spout kettle. The 3-cup produces 3 "5 oz " cups, so in essence only one large cup of coffee (with a little extra) or 1.5 "average" cups of coffee. Aside from it being too small, I did live the flavor of the coffee and the clean up is so much easier than my Aeropress or a French Press. I was also really surprised at how large the filters were (being used to the traditional drip filters).  If you really just want to fill up a travel mug each morning than this is the perfect size. If you like to have several cups throughout the day, you may want to consider the 6-cup classic or the 5-cup handblown.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Wooden collar too small The wooden collar is too small and my hand makes contact with the hot glass. Wish I had replaced my small chemex with the handle

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple Elegance Wonderful, simple design. Sturdier than the Japanese equivalent that broke a little too easily. Well made and easy to use.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Useful size I hesitated over buying this size, thinking it was versatile enough. However, I do not have much reason to serve more than myself, or occasionally me and my husband. Using the appropriate size, this size, saves time and money. I also think it looks cute. Next time, I think I will buy prefolded filters, though. I keep getting coffee grounds when I use my half-moon fold-'em filters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect size I needed a small drip coffee pot and remembered that my Mom had a Chemex in the '50's. After finding it online I ordered one and am very happy with the product. I am still getting adjusted to the amount of coffee to use for my taste. The size is perfect for one person.
