The abilities to control every variable in the brewing process, create a cup that's exactly suited to one's preferences, and highlight the unique character of the coffee has convinced many to make the switch. This new popularity has prompted the birth of several new methods and devices, as well as the resurrection of older methods. Something has been stirring in Japan... and it finally made it stateside. Hario has been reimagining means of coffeemaking for years, and their methods are now totally mainstream. But the latest Hario shipment to arrive in Louisville included more than just the classics: we’re bringing aboard an exciting new lineup. Take a look at the latest from Hario, available soon for purchase.

How Bonavita's Electric Kettle Just Got Better

As we observed in a previous post, the 21st century is witnessing a remarkable truce between all things artisan and all things automatic. Two movements – the “do-it-yourself” and the “already-done” – progress rapidly toward the same goal: an excellent brew. State-of-the-art machines continue to wow the world of coffee, but manual brewing hasn’t seemed to take a hit. It’s actually picking up speed.

The Battle Between Ice and Cold Brew Coffee

Iced Coffee Vs. Cold Brew

In a Twitter-based tug-of-war, this year has witnessed a wave of kinetic conversation about coffee on ice — and all of this before summer hit. It’s a polarizing topic that has invaded social media and intrigued coffee lovers around the world.

Many are torn between methods, having known magical moments from both ice and cold brew, and we can’t help but agree. To navigate the discussion, we’ve explored the two main categories of iced coffee-making and asked what their loyal fans have to say in their defense. We won’t be lifting the arm of a single champion, but we’ll dance around the ring and let readers decide who deserves the belt.

Who Else Is Excited About a Slayer in Louisville?

For most, a conversation about Kentucky doesn’t conjure images of chic coffee shops and young connoisseurs sipping espresso. Things like horse racing, fried chicken, and college basketball have obscured the complex identity of the Bluegrass State, but there’s actually a bit more to it. As a fledgling Louisvillian, newly arrived from the West Coast, I’ll confess arrogance and admit that my expectations of Kentucky’s coffee scene weren’t high. I wondered, "What could Louisville have on San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Vancouver, or Los Angeles?" But to my surprise and delight, the quaint collection of coffee shops around here is really taking flight.

ancap porcelain cups

We’re constantly coming across products that we think can be improved upon. Looking to improve upon existing products, or dropping products for those we think are better, has become one of the driving factors for us as we seek to provide brewing equipment and accessories that we ourselves love and are proud of. Over a year ago we came to this place with our ceramic cup offering. While the cups we carried at the time got the job done, their style, sizes, and durability were all subpar. At that point we began to look for espresso, cappuccino, and latte cups that we could be proud to offer to the shop owners and baristas (in the cafe and at home) who trust us with their coffee gear.

Today we’re happy to officially announce a line of cups that live up to our expectations: Ancap Porcelain Cups.

We're mighty proud of these United States.

From the start, Americans have been inventors, artists, and entrepreneurs. And to this day they glory in what they make and do. In anticipation of Independence Day, we're saluting a few of those products that are made in the USA by making them more accessible to you — with a discount!

Were the Espro Press just an ordinary press pot, it’s arrival in our office wouldn’t have been accompanied by anything special. You see, we’re no strangers to French-pressed coffee. In fact, it was nothing other than a rich and full-bodied cup produced by a traditional French press that wooed several of us right into the world of specialty coffee. Since then, however, many coffee-lovers have replaced their presses with siphons, Chemexes, V60s, and the like. Why? Mainly, the silt. Sediment. Mud. Call it what you will, but it’s a dealbreaker for many. Thankfully, the Espro Press is not just an ordinary press pot, and, to the delight of many, it claims to solve the problem.

DISK Fine Recipes

Thanks for everyone who participated in the Disk Fine recipe submission! There were lots of great recipes which made choosing between them an extremely difficult task for us!

Manual brewing equipment

In the automated age, convenience and complexity reign as kings. Simple human tasks are readily handed over to advanced machines that carry them out with eerie precision. Robots replace factory laborers, guitar strings are tuned at the press of a button, and Will Smith doesn’t even drive his own car around (or was that just in the movies?). Yet even as technology takes over, the do-it-yourself movement explodes and artisans emerge in nearly every industry. Twenty-first century baristas and homebrewers must ask, “In which of these directions is coffee headed?”

American Coffee Trader filters

We were heartbroken when we heard that Hario was stopping production of their cloth filters for the Hario V60. We’d fallen in love with the level of cleanness cloth filters produced in the cup. Our palate-driven hearts have, however, now been mended with the discovery of American Coffee Trader’s organic cotton filters. Besides the fact that it buries the issue of pre-wetting your paper filters in an attempt to rid your coffee of that dreaded papery taste, these filters are made from organically grown cotton and American through and through. The cotton that goes into producing these filters is organically grown in Texas, woven in South Carolina, and sewn together with care in Boston, MA.

Able Disk Standard and Able Disk Fine Side by Side

Not surprisingly, Able Brewing is at it again. Able has built a reputation as a company committed to innovation, quality, and better brewing. In its relatively short history, Able Brewing has designed two highly praised brewing filters, the Kone and the Disk. The current Disk will remain unchanged and will be the standard option for Aeropress users. But Able listened to its customers and the consensus can be summed by one request: an even finer metal filter. Introducing the Disk - Fine!

The Baratza Encore: A Barista’s Review of an Affordable Espresso Grinder

By: Chris Heiniger

The review is below, but first…

A Tale of Scandal and Misfortune from Yesteryear

Years ago, I was sold a lie by a sweet-talking grinder salesman and I spent hard-earned money on a grinder that could “totally grind for espresso.” At home, I found that this grinder did grind espresso if you wanted espresso to be thin, pale and for shots to run in 15 seconds.
