Awesome grinder

Finally bit the bullet and went all out and a higher end grinder. Absolutely love it - grinds are consistent, easy to use, and very well made. Not sure how it compares to the encore, but it certainly beats the hell out of my blade grinder

Solid Purchase

I’ve been very slow in choosing a home grinder. It was too easy to just have my beans ground at the ubiquitous coffee chain where I buy my beans. Though I had grown increasingly frustrated with the fact my coffee tasted stale and flat after day 5, I wasn’t ready to make the leap to grinding at home until I could find a decent grinder I could afford. After reading reviews for a long time on virtually every coffee grinder for home use, and factoring in the price, I finally chose the Baratza Virtuoso for these reasons: Simplicity: Easy to disassemble for cleaning and easy to adjust grind for different brews. Consistency: Rated well for consistent grinds for different types of brewing. Less mess, Less Noise: So many home grinders complain about static buildup and grinds spewing all over the counter, and noise that sounds like a plane taking off. Few complaints about the Virtuoso having these problems. Cost-Value Ratio: The price for the Virtuoso hit an acceptable point for me. I’ve had the grinder for 3 weeks now and am glad I bought this. It’s even better and easier to use than I hoped. All the points listed above check out great. I use an especially dark and oily bean, and while the grind for my French press isn’t as consistent as that done at the coffee shop, that’s as expected—they have a grinder more expensive than my first car. I’m fine with the grind I get with the Virtuoso, it’s good enough. That said, the Virtuoso does a perfect pour-over grind at 13 for me, using the same bean. Prima Coffee was great working with; having found them on the Baratza website, ordering from them couldn’t have been easier, the price was comparable, and communication and the quick shipping were excellent. I’ve been pleased to find plenty of informational links on Prima’s website to dial in the right grind and brewing help I needed.

Virtuoso Grinder Review after two weeks of using...

This was my first real grinder...I've been making coffee with a Hario pour over for years...but put off this purchase...wasn't sure I needed it...could always get the local roaster to grind for me....but wanted to get my coffee at home to taste as good as the baristas. So after two week, I am glad I bought it! Barratza manual has suggested settings for different brewers...found I had been grinding too fine before, and freshly ground coffee really does make a difference! My coffee is much improved and the only thing that changed was the grinder! Its quick and easy to use. Warranty registration is simple online fill-in.

What a difference!

I cannot believe what a difference this grinder made! I have been using a cone burr grinder for years but I had not realized how badly it had degraded over the years (resulting in inconsistent grind quality) until I got my new Virtuoso. Consistent grinds have made a HUGE difference in my brews! The Virtuoso is easy to use and delivers good consistency. I have used the finest and the coarsest settings with good results. It does produce some static in the grinds, but overall I am pleased!

Love my Virtuoso

I received my Virtuoso from Santa (via Prima Coffee) for Christmas and have been using it for about a week. The grinder works perfect. One of the "cons" was it was a little loud. It sounds like a kitten purring to me compared to my previous "beater grinder". I love listening to the Virtuoso. And it grinds beans very well too as a bonus!

Traded up from the Baratza Encore

...and glad I did. I see a more consistent grind (esp noticeable when I coarse grind for a press pot). Less fine dust and less big shards. I'm happy with this result. I'm currently grinding at 26 for a press pot and making a nice smooth cup. Pressing takes a little bit of pressure (not much) and the screen never clogs. Sweet. And... I actually like the timer more than I though I would. I'f I'm grinding 80g of coffee I just twist the timer and walk away. I don't have to hover nearby and listen to grinding while I wait to shut it off. Have only had it a couple weeks, so no data on durability other than it seems really solid. Does not seem to be working hard. Smooth and relatively quiet (I mean, it's a grinder). Oh, and I have to say that Prima was great about accepting my Encore return in just under 30 days and selling me the next step up. Truly no hassle, just as advertised! Thanks, Prima!

I didn't know that I've been sub-par coffee for years...that's changed!

For years, we've been using a $20 grinder that was pulverizing our beans and killing our coffee experience. I didn't know better. Now I do. The first time I used the Virtuoso my home coffee experience was changed forever. The same bag of beans tasted so much better. Given this is a daily morning ritual, it was a great investment.

An upgrade worth the money...

Looked around for top-level home grinders for a long time. All sources pointed to the Baratza Virtuoso. I was previously using a $100 entry level burr grinder and was starting to get embarrassed and frustrated with the mess it made of my very nice, expensive craft roasts. The fines were out of control, the consistency was terrible, and the range of settings was limited. Still, I was skeptical to spend more money and have anything less than a cafe quality grind. Well, I have not been disappointed. The Virtuoso is the personal favorite of all my favorite baristas for a reason! The fines are insignificant, the settings are numerous and offer just the right amount of control for my needs (chemex, press pot, mocha pot, v-60, aeropress), and the grind size is very consistent. Additionally, the construction is great; this baby is built to last. Just in case, the company does have excellent customer support. In fact, I called to ask about the Virtuoso and was talking to a really nice human within a very short period of time A+++ on customer service.

AWESOME!!

I have several years of pour-over experience of nearly every sort; and have traditionally used the higher end of what's available at the local box store waiting to see if I liked pour-over and not entirely convinced that spending $240 plus on a grinder was worth it - WELL, I was wrong!! This grinder is crazy-AWESOME and worth the money - I am glad that I used the other kinds to make me appreciate this one even more. I have zero complaints about this grinder - it does a great job; and one of the features that I enjoy most is due to almost no static I get to use ALL of the coffee that I ground. High quality, great warranty, service and reputation - and great grind - can't go wrong with this unit. Josh

Solid build and well supported

This grinder is excellent. The construction is very good, the motor is powerful, it's not very loud and makes top notch pour-over and french press coffee. I don't make espresso, but I have used this for Chemex, Kalita, AeroPress and french press coffee. VERY good grind quality in this grind range. I would say the level of fines and the grind size distribution are at least as good as you would get from the mega dollar grinders. Now if my home-roasting can just catch up . . . My only nit picks are that you MUST grind some sacrificial beans in this before using it. The burrs had a lot of . . . well, burrs the edge. The first 50g or so of coffee had metal particulates. After that is was fine. The only on-going annoyance is that this doesn't do the best job of keeping grounds from ending up all over the counter. I'm in AZ and the low humidity just means there will be some messes.

I just received my virtuoso in the mail last week and have had plenty of time to play around with grind sizes for my various manual brew methods. Terrific Grinder

Once you enter the world of serious coffee making, the need for a quality burr grinder becomes increasingly apparent. I own a variety of coffee machines/makers/brewers, the newest being the least expensive Aeropress. Each method of brewing coffee requires the correct grind, a more daunting task then the average Joe realizes. For instance, once you have found a grind that produces a beautiful crema on your espresso, you find that different beans/roasts will require different settings. This grinder has more than enough settings to allow incremental changes in your grind. The price and construction seem reasonable. Enjoy!

Best Grinder I've Owned

I've been using the Virtuoso for a week now and it's definitely a big step up from the Capresso Infinity it is replacing. This is a very solid and heavy machine, yet it's pleasantly quiet while grinding. The resulting grind is very consistent and the anti-static measures seem to work rather well. I've only ground for Chemex thus far, but want to try for Aeropress soon. I don't do espresso at home, so I can't comment on the really fine side. It seems like it will be very easy to clean, especially the hopper. There are a few small things that I'd like to mention that a new owner might want to know: 1) Getting the knob on was a little tricky and it still feels a bit loose, but it doesn't come off. 2) I've had to play with the grind setting a bit. The documentation recommended starting place for Chemex is 20, but that seems awfully fine for a Chemex (though it never clogged the filter). I've gone a bit up during the week and it seems good. Overall, I'm incredibly happy. It keeps working like this, I will be a very satisfied coffee drinker.

New to the Conical Burr Grinder

Always owned blades up to this point. It is a little louder then I expected but it is not obnoxious. Been mainly using it for medium grind so far. The grind does not seem as uniform as I was expecting. Maybe there is a difference at different levels of adjustment. The top cover seems a little loose fitting but otherwise pretty solid overall. Hopefully lasts for some time.

Baratza Virtuosos

This grinder does an excellent job of grinding coffee. I find my cups of coffee to be more flavorful than my previous blade grinding method. I give it only 4 stars because of a couple of design issues. The removal of the cup, containing the ground coffee, deposits ground coffee into the bottom of the unit and on my counter every time. Short of a handheld vacuum, there is no easy way to clean this. The Adjustable Self-Timer starts grinding as it is being turned clockwise, instead of waiting until it begins the counter clockwise rotation. It requires you to know what setting you want and be quick about getting there or you will end up with extra coffee ground.

A (small) step up from the Encore

In a nutshell: the Virtuoso is a well-built grinder that provides adequate performance for brewing coffee at home with a chemex, v60, clever, french press, or similar. For the price, I think it's well worth it to pick up over the Encore for most people, but I wouldn't recommend upgrading to the Virtuoso for those who already own an Encore or similar competing model.

My initial call to Prima inquiring about coffee grinders, was handled efficiently and professional by a well informed customer service representative. I am a beginner and he steered me into the Baratza Virtuoso coffee grinder. It's simple operation and relatively low noise makes it appealing. I set the grinder at 28 for French press brew. This grinder/French press substantially enhances my mornings.

Great grind

We use this grinder with our Moccamaster drip coffeemaker (we use an 18 setting for this machine). This grinder is a bit messy: some of the ground coffee sticks to the inside of the grinder and drops onto the counter during the grind and, sometimes, well after the grind is complete (static electricity?). Otherwise, it does a great job. Much better than a blade grinder. We would recommend this machine. You might want to keep it on a tray to catch the grinds that get away.

The first time I tried to use this coffee grinder, it didn't work and the rubber gasket and a plastic part were slightly mangled in the process. Prima Coffee wants pictures before allowing the return, but I'm having trouble taking clear pictures for them; I'm not a photographer and don't have a great camera. I'm so sorry that I bought it and even more sorry that I didn't use my Amazon Prime Acct. This is certainly NOT a no hassle return. So, $229.00 later, I'm still taking pictures and grinding my coffee beans with a $15.00 blade grinder.
