The Clever is both easy-to-use and to clean, and makes a great holiday gift.

Aptly named the Clever, Abid's full-immersion dripper produces a clean, tasty cup that couldn't be any easier to use. To brew a cup, simply place a filter in the brewer, add ground coffee, pour water over the coffee, steep for 2-4 minutes, and then place the dripper on top of your cup. The cup's rim engages the release valve and the coffee begins to drain through the bottom of the dripper into your cup. Depending on the size selected, this brewer takes either a standard #2 or #4 filter, either of which can be selected after clicking "Add to Cart." If more filters are needed, see our listing for Melitta coffee filters .

  • Durable BPA-free plastic body
  • Includes dripper, lid, and coaster
  • Works best with #2 or #4 size filters
  • Available in 18-ounce (yields ~16 ounces) or 10-ounce (yields ~10 ounces) size
  • Designed for manual, immersion-style coffee brewing
  • Brews one cup at a time

How to brew

  • 24-27 grams of medium- to coarse-ground coffee
  • 400-450 milliliters of water, heated to 200-205 degrees
  • 3:30-4:00 total brew time

Abid is the brains behind the Abid Clever Dripper, a full-immersion by-the-cup coffee brewer. The Abid Clever Dripper is an easy to learn, single cup manual coffee brewer that simplifies the brewing process. To brew, you place the coffee filter and coffee into the Clever Dripper, pour the desired water volume over, let it sit for 3 to 4 minutes, and then set the dripper on top of a coffee mug to drain out. The Clever has a release mechanism on the bottom that allows the dripper to drain when placed on top of the mug. Clean up is as easy as dumping out the filter and rinsing with water. The Clever is the perfect place to start for someone who is wanting an easy to use single cup coffee brewer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Consistent and Reliable! I love the Clever! It's a great value at $19 and a great brewer for beginners and seasoned baristas alike. I get consistently sparkly and tasty cups of coffee with little to no effort. I especially like to recommend it to people who are new to coffee, citing the ease of use, reduction of waste, and the fact that you wouldn't need a gooseneck kettle to get started. And you can buy Melitta #4 filters ANYWHERE. The only thing that bugs me is that it takes on a bit of color after a few weeks. I wish they made it in a different color.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Coffee for Dummies (Myself included) Sitting here drinking a cup of Clever brewed coffee as I type, very easy to use and pretty much fool-proof. It comes apart nicely for cleaning and is very convenient. I typically like the coffee from my Aeropress more (when I get it right, which is not often, sigh) but the Clever does a great job every time. Cleanup is easy too, throw out the filter, rinse and done. One problem I had with it was that the filters have a tendency to split open if you stir too much or don't fold the seams over, so make sure you go easy on them!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Brews Delicious Coffee But ... Purchased thru Amazon a week ago. Gives my old French Press a run for its money and NO GRIT in the bottom of my mug. I'm not using a permanent, gold-tone filter because paper filters are easier to clean up. I first followed the directions to the letter and loved the flavor of the coffee; I think it extracts more flavor than a conventional pour-thru, where the coffee doesn't have time to steep. The gotcha is you can't move the Clever once you pour the water into it; it drip-drip-drips on the table. I tried picking the Clever up and walking it to the kitchen table and it dripped a mess onto the table. Two mornings in a row. I replicated the problem by filling it with boiling water then moving it to the sink anddrip-drip-drip. I don't know if this could be corrected, but it works a treat as long as you don't move it after pouring.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I only wish more people new about it! This Clever Coffee Dripper is such a simple product, but one that does EXACTLY what you want it to do! It makes great coffee. You can alter the taste to your liking. It cleans up so easily. And it's inexpensive. While I often use a typical electric drip maker if several people are going to be having coffee, or I want coffee available throughout the morning, if I just want a quick cup or an afternoon warm-up for me and my wife, the Clever is my go to devise. In the past we always used a French press for single or double servings. I do enjoy FP, but we all know that clean up is a hassle and you're going to get significant sediment in the your last few sips. Both of those issues are GONE with the Clever. Clean up is a piece of cake. I grab out the paper filter (and toss it in the worm bin), run the Clever under the faucet and that's it! I just wish more people knew about it. It's probably just too simple for big retailers to sell it. Why would anyone buy the other, more expensive systems single serving systems when this one is less expensive, easier on the planet and will never give you an "error' message? I highly recommend!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great entry product I'm new to good coffee, and this has been a great first brewing device. It's simple enough that I feel like I can focus on the effects of changing the really basic variables - beans, grind size, ratio, brew time - without having to worry about pouring technique. After a few weeks, I am starting to see a little bit of the staining that other reviewers have commented on, at least at the very bottom. But I haven't experienced any dripping - I walk the brewer from my counter to the trash can every morning to dump the grounds, and it's stayed sealed without fail.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Clever Coffe Dripper I bought the new model CCD because my old model began leaking at the valve. Now that I had the new dripper, I decided to experiment with the old one. I found that, with care, it can be disassembled. Working from the bottom, I used my finger to remove the flat silicone piece. I then thoroughly cleaned all of the parts with a brush and then soaked them in a solution of oxygen bleach such as OxyClean Free. I re-assembled everything and the leak was fixed. It appears that some build-up prevented a good seal. I suspect that there is enough flexibility in the silicone that you could push the valve through from the top but I didn't try this. Since the old dripper is now working properly, I put the new one away and will use it when the old one permanently dies. I prepare single mugs of coffee at a time and machines do not make the coffee hot enough when small quantities are prepared. The CCD solves this problem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Tasting Coffee Ever I bought this as a birthday present for my husband after he told me he wanted one. He likes his coffee, so I was glad to, but I thought it was silly. We did a side by side comparison of the coffee made by our traditional brewer versus this dripper. I didn't think it would make much difference at all, but it was his birthday, so. The coffee from the dripper had ALL of the flavor. It made my cup of coffee taste so indistinct. I haven't looked into any others, but this dripper is well made and has a clever design. Buy one. You won't regret it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best of both worlds I have been using the Clever drip brewer for a month. What a wonderful design. The practicality of a cone drip with the added bonus of an immersion brewer. I love the durable construction and the ease of use. It nice that you don't get the silt, due to the use of a cone filter. Sometimes you don't want the added texture that come from using a french press design. The self actuating valve works well, and it even comes with a coaster to keep your work area clean.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from use daily this works great and couldn't be easier. I do weigh the amount of coffee I use. You need to be careful not to bump this during the brewing process. Easy to do in a small kitchen. It's a real mess to clean up. And if the dripper falls on the floor, the little "legs" could break off and then it's done for. Just watch what you're doing and you'll be happy with this!

I just ordered this and on the home page it was listed as $18. Then when I went to pay it was listed as 21. Please correct. Sueanne Nichols

Sounds like a question the staff should answer, or are they just being lazy? May be the difference between the small and large size. The large will do everything the small will do, but the reverse isn't true. Be sure to FOLLOW DIRECTIONS and use only warm water or mild soap occasionally to clean. I use mine every day.

I'm trying to decide which size to buy. Is there any disadvantage in brewing less coffee (say, 6-8oz) in a large sized Clever? In other words, does the small sized Clever do a better job brewing 6-8oz than the large, or does the large do equally as well?

Asked by: Jack C
I have the large sized Clever and regularly brew anywhere from 8-14 ozit makes a great tasting cup every time! Usually I end up drinking more than 8 oz, so I'm really glad I went with the larger size for days I need an extra pick-me-up or have a guest.

I use my clever dripper for traveling. The large is too large for my hard-sided suitcase. If I put it in my soft-sided suitcase, which expands and contracts depending on how much is put into it, then it fits. But won't the plastic crack under the stress?

Asked by: mahalonalo
I don't know exactly, but what I can assume is that it would crack. my lid has already cracked from something that I don't remember happening. But, I think the lid is a bit thinner than the body, so it's a toss up. I wouldn't risk it, knowing that my lid has already cracked.

What are the exact dimensions of both sizes of the clever dripper? (need for choosing suitcase size for travel)

Asked by: mahalonalo
The Large is 5 5/8" high, the small 4 3/4" high. The large can be contained in a cube 5 5/8" on an edge, the small in a cube 4 3/4" on an edge. The small definitely looks smaller, just contains a #2 conical filter, and 10 oz. of water. The large just contains a #4 conical filter and about 18 oz. of water. The diameter of the top is just slightly less than the height for both. I have found that I lose about 2 oz. of water into the grounds and filter. IMO, storage space or travel is the only justification for the small one. The large one will do everything the small one will and is easier to pour water into. Also a favorite of mine is the Hario MSS-1 hand grinder. The grind consistency is way better than an inexpensive motorized grinder.

Are the pics of the actual item? I keep seeing this exact product/box elsewhere with a much uglier handle (ugly) but in other colors (nice). Different models/brands? What's confusing is often both versions are shown. Also what happens if it's dishwashed?

Asked by: Moso
Yep - that's it! Often the gaskets get lost, but if you remove them prior to dish-washing it should be fine.

Does it work with metal filters? If so, what is the diameter and brands that you recommend? Able and IMS for Aeropress come to mind. What sets Clever apart from most drippers?

Asked by: coen
We haven't tried pairing the Clever with a metal filter, but in theory any #4 style metal basket should fit right in. The Clever is a cross between full immersion and pour over, and unlike most full immersion methods it can be used with paper. It's made to be exceedingly simple and highly functional.

Does the 18 oz Clever Dripper work with either of the Kalita servers? If not please can you suggest a server that would work with it. Thanks

Asked by: Tony
Yes - the Clever is compatible with the 500ml Kalita server. It is also compatible with the Hario XGS series servers.

Is the clever L unit dishwasher safe/proof?

Asked by: Eeorr
The Clever is not dishwasher safe. We recommend using a coffee detergent every now and then to keep the plastic clean of excess oils.

I have had the first generation Clever Dripper for 4-5 years and now there are cracks in the plastic. The silicon stopper has never failed. Is the newer generation plastic more durable. I have to admit that for the last 5 months i have used it daily.

Asked by: robert0996
Clever drippers tend to last through 1-2 years of consistent usage, as long as the coffee oils are thoroughly cleaned off the plastic. We recommend using a coffee detergent, like Full Circle Espresso Machine Cleaner, to help ensure longevity of the plastic.
