The Baratza Encore Coffee Grinder has some big shoes to fill. For the past few years, the Baratza Maestro and Baratza Maestro Plus have set the bar for quality coffee grinding at home. The Baratza Encore has evolved out of the Maestro and Maestro Plus to bring about even greater grinding capabilities at the same affordable price. With updated hardened steel burrs and a new gear box, the Encore grinder brings the capability of grinding for espresso to Baratza's introductory model. The Encore has retained the front pulse button featured on the Maestro Plus to allow for easy on-demand grinding, and reverted the side on/off switch to a multi-directional on/off rather than the previous timer knob. With the improvements of the updated burrs and Baratza's Gearbox 2.0, Baratza has once again provided an unprecedented combination of quality and affordability for home coffee drinkers everywhere.

Details:

  • Burrs: Updated 40mm hardened steel conical burrs
  • Grind Adjustment: 40 settings from fine to coarse allows a grind range of 250 to 1200 microns
  • Motor: A 450 RPM DC motor with gear speed reducer helps keep the beans cool while grinding. Gear speed reducer also reduces noise as well as heat and static build up. The circuitry is equipped with an automatically resetting thermal cutoff switch.
  • Gearbox 2.0: Adds increased strength and durability of the drive transmission, all the while decreasing the noise output. The new gearbox includes a new drive shaft, motor mounting plate and bushings, as well as a new drive gear made of 15% glass filled thermo plastic. This thermo plastic is quieter than the prior metal gear, wears better, and is more shock resistant. During Baratza's testing of the Encore, stainless steel screws were thrown into the burrs, and in every case the motor/gear/burrs stopped immediately due to the thermal cutout, helping preserve the gears. The gearbox is automatically-resettable if this were to happen.
  • On-Demand Grinding: Front-mounted pulse button allows for easy, on-demand grinding, helpful for when you're grinding directly into a brew basket.
  • Hopper Capacity: 8oz (227 g)
  • Grounds Bin Capacity: 5oz (142 g)
  • Dimensions: 4.7" x 13.8" x 6.3"
  • Weight: 7 lbs
  • Power Rating: 110V AC 50/60Hz 1 Amp
  • Safety Listing: UL/CSA/CE/EK
  • Warranty: One year

Baratza

Baratza is the company at the forefront of home coffee grinding innovation. Before Baratza entered the coffee manufacturing scene, one was hard pressed to find an affordable burr coffee grinder. Now, home baristas and cafes alike have multiple affordable burr grinders to choose from courtesy of the U.S. based company. Baratza currently offers five different burr grinders: Baratza Maestro Plus, Baratza Virtuoso, Baratza Virtuoso Preciso, Baratza Vario, and the weight based grinding Baratza Vario-W. In addition to this lineup, Baratza has also released a weight based grinding attachment for their grinders, the Baratza Esatto. One popular mantra from the coffee world is: the biggest investment a coffee fan can make is in a high quality grinder. Baratza has made the "investment" part of that coffee truism a lot more attainable.

Love my grinder!

Local premium coffee roaster suggested I get a burr grinder. I loved the education that Prima has on their website so I read up on the topic and purchased the Baratza Encore. So far I LOVE it. It has made a huge difference in the quality of my cup of coffee.

I originally purchased this coffee grinder because I had 2 huge bags of coffee beans that was not grinded and this grinder came highly recommended. It turns out that it not only works well but it brings a better deep taste to the coffee. I love it!!!

So good.

Not exactly sure why I waited so long to buy this. It's perfect for what I do at home - manual brewing. Slightly louder than I expected, but not obnoxiously so. It's the best bang for you buck.

Works great!!

My wife bought this for me about a month ago, and it's been just great. I grind enough for one or two days at once, and where once I used to manually grind for 10-15 minutes, now this zips through the load in a few seconds. The output is very homogeneous, brews much better than the manual grind I used to do. Thanks honey ;-)

Perfect for me

Compared to my previous grinder the Baratza is perfection. Quiet, simple to use, and a very good grind. I use a Chemex and a French Press so my grinds are a bit coarser than the Espresso grinds that some previous reviews indicated the Baratza had problems with. I'd buy another in a heart beat!

Simply and Effective

For a coffee enthusiast this is a great coffee grinder. It's not complicated work, small enough to fit in most areas, and is fairly consistent on the grind size. It's not the best for perfect expresso grinds but it does great at producing a large range of course to decent fine grinds! It's also very simple to clean! Couldn't be happier for the money!

Simple, powerful, precise

I know it's a little odd to say so, but I love this thing. I was upgrading from a kind of faux burr (a $50 Cuisinart "burr" grinder that did a decent job but was noisy, not terribly precise, and made a mess), and I decided to go for this one, with all its great reviews. Couldn't be happier. It's powerful and precise and not terribly noisy, and knowing that every single part is replaceable and that Barratza has such great customer service gives me a lot of confidence that I'll have this one for a long time to come.

Delicious Coffee!

I've been using a cheap blade grinder with a coffee press for about a year now. It worked fine, but I wanted to upgrade since I have coffee consistently. I have to say I haven't noticed a huge difference in the taste (but I'm no connoisseur). I have noticed the very consistent grind this grinder gives. The coffee grounds are quite similar in size. It's easy to use and adjust once you assemble it (also not difficult). The grounds can get stuck in the machine so you have to tap the sides to get all of it into the receiver - no big deal. Perfect for daily grinding needs as well as large amouints.

Love my first Burr!

I love my Baratza Encore. It lives up to it's reputation yet it's better than I expected because I taste a difference in my coffee-delicious! It's compact, quiet and quick. I look forward to making coffee just to use my Burr...never going back to grinders. I did a lot of research before purchasing but what cinched it for me was the Prima video staring Chris (couldn't catch his last name). He is straightforward and unpretentious. The video is well made and was fun to watch. I got a true sence of the product. Well done in the production department.

Baratza Encore Conical Coffee Grinder

It may be at the lower end of the Baratza line, but it meets my needs exactly. I don't do a lot of different grinds or use multiple brands of coffees. I have the coffee I like and after a few tries of different grinds, I settled on 18 as the perfect grind for me. I use it everyday. If anything changes I will edit this review later after using it for a longer period of time.

Exceeded my expections

I just weighed my beans, set the grind at 21 and turned it on. Worked great. I've only had the machine a few days; I practiced removing the top burr before I used it the first time so I don't anticipate any problems with cleaning. My very first pourover with the Chemex was a success. All I've ever had before is blade grinders. What a difference!

Encore Baratza coffee grinder

This is my 3rd Baratza conical burr grinder since 1990. This one is 10/10 EXCEPT - the 85db noise level..... They solved the static charge problem on the hopper, good for them. I was using a temporary grinder brand that begins with a "C" and it had a noise level of 95db. Sounded like an F-16 on the runway! I have four engineering degrees so I am an uber geek in these areas. I just spent over a thousand dollars to put sound proofing in my Covette. Reducing sound is the direction kitchen appliances go these days. Our new dishwasher is below 45db. I almost can't hear it. I almost want to take it apart to put some sound reducing in it. If the sound is coming from the new gear-set design, then look at a different gear angle cut.

Made the move...

Moved up to the Encore after years using a blade grinder. Can you taste the difference in the coffee between a blade v burr...absolutely. After researching entry-level burr grinders (including Capresso & Bodum) til blue in the face, pulled the trigger on the Baratza Encore. Decision was made on the following (1) Prima Coffee customer service-excellent, (2) Baratza customer service-excellent, and (3) full replacement for 1-yr with pretty much all parts replaceable through Baratza after that. Surprised at the good weight of the unit. Will be used for drip & periodically french press. Can't speak to quality of grind for expresso or durability since just recently purchased. All's good at present.

Fantastic for everything but espresso!

I've been using a Porlex hand grinder. One obvious upgrade is that it's way more convenient to drop beans in the hopper and flip a switch rather than crank the grinder by hand for two minutes. The grind consistency is WAY better than the hand grinder, making the cups I make through Aeropress, French Press, and Hario V60 a lot better. It's not a perfect grind consistency, and if you have the funds for a Virtuoso, maybe go for it. But this is definitely a wonderful grinder.

Very nice burr grinder at a nice price. This was recommended to me by my son whose coffee is outstanding. It's easy to take care of and does an excellent job of grinding coffee beans, You can choose from a multitude of settings. This is pretty much a no-brainer. I was skeptical of this grinder when I purchased it as compared to the much pricier options. I am incredibly happy with the product. The grind is consistent and the grinder is relatively quieter. Best Grinder for Price

This is the first electric non-blade grinder I've purchased (I've also used the Hario Skerton & Mini Mill in the past). I use it primarily for my Mypressi Twist and Clever. I'm no espresso calibrating genius, but I've found it to easily grind for the Mypressi. In fact, I have to have it a few notches up from the finest grind or it will choke it out. So far I've been using it for around 7 months and there are no signs of slowing down. The Encore is almost entirely plastic, but if you don't toss it around, I don't see why it wouldn't last for a long time. It appears to be well built. When compared to the price, I think this is about the most cost-effective and versatile grinder you can get. If you have the budget or have a real pro machine it's worth it to spend the extra, but this has proven to be an excellent starter grinder for me.

great for the price

This is an amazing option for someone who wants much better coffee then most other burr grinders at this price point, does not want to hand crank their beans, and is not "nurding" out every morning with how much difference 1 click makes in their morning cup of coffee. The grind is good. Course suffers a little bit but medium and fine are good. My only dislike is that it "dusts" a lot more then my last burr grinder. What i mean is the chaff from beans gets ground up and stays at the top of the collection bin. when you remove the bin the chaff "dusts" or falls out and goes all over the counter. My last grinder (the infinity) was a little cleaner then this one when removing the collection bin. Overall i like it. it works great for aeropress, v60 and Chemex. I have not used it for expresso, and it was okay for cupping. for $130 its a great upgrade to a paddle grinder.

Nice home grinder - glad to have it

I'm happy to have replaced my Baratza Encore grinder with another one. The price is right and it's easy to use. Glad I can adjust the grind level easily. Downsides: difficult to clean and the directions are never very good. The motor on this new one is noisier than my previous one, but it sprays coffee grounds slightly less than the previous one.

Documentation Not Updated

The manufacturer made changes to the design which are not reflected in the online user manual. For example, the recommended grind settings for different coffee makers in the online manual were out of date, compared to the settings given on the card that came with the grinder. Also, none of the pictures of the grinder reflected the new wing-nut feature on the conical grinder. I did not know if I should remove the wing nut first prior to use. I had to contact the manufacturer to find out that this was a new feature, and that it was meant to stay on, but it could also be removed. I wonder how long the documentation has been out of date.

Baratza Encore Conical Burr Coffee Grinder

Everything arrived on time. Some of the stuff was packed in the grinder bin and wasn't found until after pulling all the packing material apart. The quick start guide is missing the final instruction on inserting the grinder-head before inserting the bin. The spanish guide has the first instructions in English. We were afraid to take the "OPEN" sticker off. I suppose it's OK but may require cleaning. The bin is great as you can grind what you need and dump the bin in the coffee maker. Our cheap grinder had to be "finger-cleaned" to get all the coffee out.

First burr grinder

I have had this 2 weeks. It is my first burr grinder. My primary purpose was for a French press. I used it on the 30 setting as recommended and it works great. Have not tried any other settings. Had a blade grinder before this and went through 3 French presses thinking they were the problem. After doing research realized it was the inconsistent grind that came with the blade grinder. I get a very consistent grind out of this not sure why I would get a more expensive model when this works so well. I just leave the whole beans in the hopper and grind as needed. It is not air tight but I'm not as picky as others when it comes to a perfect cup.

Great Grind but a little Messy

My grinder has been producing perfect French press level grind. It's only drawback is that ever time I grind, a few grounds get behind the container and builds up. This requires cleaning to let the container fit properly. Other than that I am very pleased with my Encore grinder.

Pretty darn good for French Press

I bought this and then went to Starbucks and asked for a sample of their French press grind for reference. I then went home and ground the same amount of the same beans and actually got less dust from my Encore. My only beef is that even the Encore's full online manual didn't reference the rubber piece that comes with the grinder. I am using it over the grinder wheels, but I'm not sure if I need to or not..

Easy to Use

I bought this on the Primo website and I'm very happy with it. The price is very competitive with Amazon and even the stores so there's no reason not to buy directly from Primo. Took me a few tries to get the right setting for my new Clever brewing device. But I found the setting is 16 works just fine for the Clever. It's so much better making your own coffee than buying it at a café who's quality changes almost daily. This gives you total control. I love it.

Encore vs Solis

We've had two Baratza Solis grinders for years, one at our cottage in Canada and the other at our home in Florida. The timer switch broke on one and we decided to purchase the updated grinder, the Encore. The first thing that we found is that it didn't grind fine enough (we like an espresso grind) but Prima sent us a Youtube video showing how to open the unit and make the adjustment (great service from Prima). We do find that the Encore is slower than the Solis; likely due to different gearing. The other significant difference is that the switch is on/off, rather than a timer. My wife likes the timer; I actually prefer on/off.

Great grind

Purchased 1 mo. ago to replace Baratza Encore.  Miss the timer a lot !! We use Bunn coffee maker.  #18 for French Roast is perfect for us.  My hubby is retired Navy Chief. We like our coffee very strong.  Relatively quiet while grinding. We tried a Mr. Coffee burr grinder.  Bad. Loud. Chalk on blackboard sound at end of grind.  Would be 5 star, but I want the timer back !!

Good for Pour-overs

Buying an Aeropress, Chemex, V-60, or other pour-over? Want to move up from your electric blade grinder? Don't want a manual grinder? Don't want to break the bank? Tired of questions? This is the grinder for you! Coarse espresso to fine drip to coarse drip is where this machine shines. The drawbacks are that it's not optimal for espresso (though I've read you can make some modifications) and french press, as it is not consistent enough and will produce too many fines (though if a blade grinder is the alternative, this is 150% better). Control over grind size could be improved with more steps and better consistency, but all this to say that for a $129 grinder, this is the best in it's price range.

For any method of drip or immersion brewing, this grinder is adept and achieves consistent results from cup to cup. It is easy to operate and clean. It's also very quiet. In the realm of "entry level" grinders, the Encore reigns supreme.

Won't grind dark roast

I have enjoyed this grinder up to now--but just brought home some "double dark" roast--and it won't grind it. Apparently the beans are too lightweight; they won't feed into the burrs.
