The Chemex® coffeemaker was invented by chemist Peter J. Schlumbohm, Ph.D., in 1941. Being a doctor of Chemistry, he was very familiar with laboratory apparati and the methods of filtration and extraction. He applied this knowledge when designing his coffeemaker by modifying the laboratory funnel, adding an "air channel" and a pouring spout. He added the "air channel" so the air displaced by the liquid dripping into the vessel could easily escape past the laboratory filter paper. Over the years, these items have been recognized as outstanding examples of American Design. In 1956, the Chemex coffee maker was selected by the Illinois Institute of Technology as one of the best-designed items of modern times, the only coffee brewer chosen for the award. The coffee maker and the water kettle are in the permanent collections of museums such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Smithsonian, the Philadelphia Museum and the Corning Museum located in Corning, NY. When it comes to exceptionally tasting coffee made from a simple but elegant process, the Chemex has no rival.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great coffee, Needs work on process... The Chemex makes EXCELLENT coffee, I would recommend it, I will use it everyday and I am very happy I bought it. It took a few uses to get the amount of coffee right. Using a tablespoon per 5 oz. portion is not how things work in reality, I have never seen anyone drink a 5 oz. cup of coffee. The "6 cup coffee maker" should be a 3 or 4 cup coffee maker if being used in the real world. Also, be prepared to wait a few minutes while the filter does its work, for some this may be tough because it does take a while to complete the "drip" cycle. Well worth the wait though, the end product is excellent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product for making coffee This is my second chemex; my first one lasted two years until an item fell off our fridge and broke the chemex into several pieces. This one comes with a wooden collar for holding when it is hot; the unit is designed to be used with the chemex paper filters. Using the filters with the unit provides an optimal experience making coffee if you monitor the water temperature that you pour in and use high quality coffee (preferably freshly ground). It is better than the French press method and very much better than the conventional coffee makers on the market if you have the time to use this unit correctly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Aesthetics Meets Expert Functionality As I type to you dear contemplative reader, I am savoring my very first sips of heaven, brewed fresh from my very own 6 cup Original Chemex having just arrived moments earlier. I am literally capturing my very first experience for you to share, in hopes that on my word, you too will have this beautiful tranquility in a cup to caress your afternoon into a true thing of beauty, passion, and bliss. If you're asking yourself if a simple coffee maker can do all that, you're not alone! Many do, as I once did, and sadly many never will be able to answer that question if they do not try it for themselves. I propose Schrodinger's Cat as an example! Anyone watch The Big Bang Theory? It's our favorite show! I won't go deeply into that theory other than to say if you want to know the answer to the question, you must first be willing to try! For such a minimal investment, I think the course of action is evident! Now, onto this moment of bliss. Ahh, yes. This silky, deeply toasted cup of rich Amber I have before me is truly incredible! I took the deepest, most bitter profiled coffee I have and used it as my first test batch. Having previously sauntered all over youtube searching for technique instruction and even size comparisons of the Chemex models prior to my purchase, I was prepared to enjoy the ritual! Yes, it took slightly more time to perform than a traditional coffee maker or even my Nespresso system, which I also love, but honestly, the American notion of grabbing coffee to go is absurd! Sit down I say! Relax! Enjoy, find your zen! Life is far too short to rush your coffee, it is but to rob yourself of that pleasure first thing in the morning that sets the tone for the day and dare I say ends up with the masses angrily driving to work in a frenzy instead of being focused and calm, centered and prepared! Don't rush the coffee! *sly smile* Needless to say, this normally much-too-bitter coffee turned out enticingly complex and smooth, reminiscent of the coffee I enjoyed (quite thoroughly, hehe) while overseas in Eurasia. The color was so deep and beautiful! Voila! Totally worth it. I am very impressed! I think this tradition greatly added to my afternoon, and I will look forward to it forever more. I now intend to make future purchases of additional Chemex sizes differing to accommodate guests and mood. I think it would make a great conversation piece on display in the kitchen! It was very easy to clean with just a rinse required, and the leather and wood collar are just gorgeous. I think the 6 cup model is perfect for two people, but perhaps the 8 cup model would have been a better choice if I had only intended on owning one. I am thrilled with my purchase, and am especially thrilled with Prima Coffee's exemplary service and hospitable display of kindness to our family through our order! We ordered only two days ago, and yet here I sit enjoying, and writing. Incredible! Well done! I couldn't be happier with my experience with the Chemex and! Consider us customers for life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New to Chemex I've been brewing with an Aeropress for the past year (it's great, by the way), but I wanted to be able to brew more than 10oz at a time. I wasn't a fan of the French Press, since it required I transfer my brew to another container to keep it from getting overextracted. Enter the Chemex. I've got my technique dialed in now, and I'm having more fun and enjoying my cup more with this product than I ever did with the Aeropress. Outstanding quality - and it looks great on my counter too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smoothest cup of coffee you'll ever have This is an elegant looking coffee maker that I have out on my kitchen island all day until the coffee is gone. I'm a stay at home mom and I sip on my coffee nearly the whole day to keep me going. Before the Chemex, I was brewing coffee in a french press multiple times a day; I felt rushed to drink it before it started to taste real bitter and acidic so multiple batches was a must. That was a lot of work considering I have 3 young kids. With the Chemex, I brew one full batch to last me the whole day. The coffee from the Chemex is so pure that it tastes the same at 8am when I first make it to about 2pm when I have my last cup. The coffee is smooth and clean. I have to say though, it's not a quick process to make. It's an experience, which I look forward to, but it is work. I measure out the coffee, grind it, wet the filter, drain the water, use a timer and scale for the blooming, and try and pour it at a rate so my brew time is no more than 4 minutes or so. This takes practice and with kids screaming in the back, it can be a little hard to enjoy the coffee making process. But I just tell myself, once I brew it right just this once, I will have my awesome coffee the whole day. So it's worth it. It's easy to clean but you will need a brush wand. Regarding size, the 6-cup size is good for just me to last the whole day or for a breakfast with just 1 other person. It says 6-cups but I think it actually makes just enough for 2 medium to large mugs of coffee. I will need to buy the larger size for larger groups.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Clean Lines I decided to try this mode and model of making coffee. I love the clean lines and ease of cleaning. I also purchased the recommended "cone" and a hand grinder to complete the components needed for the process. I finally unplugged and am greatly enjoying the "ritual" of grinding and brewing my own coffee. Still working out the bugs as to strength but overall the experience is pleasurable and equivalent to brewing tea.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from so far so good bought this about 2 weeks ago, thoughts so far: good quality, easy to clean, easy to use. the only drawbacks to the chemex is it does not keep your coffee hot, so u do have to heat it up. & it does take a few minutes to setup and brew but for me its not an issue, just something to keep in mind. other than that it does brew a fabulous cup of coffee and it is everything i thought it would be.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Chemex 6 Cup Coffee Pot with Gass Handle Love this pot. Previously had the Chemex with the wooden collar but like this one even more. I love the coffee from a Chemex as it is not too hot and taste terrific. I'm sure it's the method Chemex cofffee pots encourage for the boiling temperature that makes such a great tasting cup of coffee. We would never go back to a traditional drip electric coffee maker.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Coffee! This is the second time I have ordered from you. My son-in-law had one and my husband thought it was the best cup of coffee ever, so we ordered one. My Son came over and we fixed him a cup of coffee and he said he had to have one. So that is what he is getting for Christmas! Thank you for your quick and easy order and delivery! Great Coffee!

I brew with the 6 cup chemex every morning. I notice that sometimes water is coming down the sides of the chemex in addition to the tip of the cone. Is this inherent in the process, or am I doing something wrong?

Asked by: JohnK
Water will inevitably escape from the sides of the paper, and it's not going to cause any problems. Do make sure, however, that you keep your water level at or below the level of the grounds. If the water level exceeds the level of the grounds as you pour, the water escaping through the sides of the cone will dilute your cup.

what size filter for 6 cup?

Asked by: Patty
Hey, Patty. You've got a few options; The white circular FC-100 filters, the square shaped FS-100 filters, or the natural brown square shaped FSU-100 filters. We usually recommend the white filters because they impart less paper taste than the natural brown, and we think the square shape fits a little better than the circular filters. Give the FS-100's a try and see what you think!
