Yama

Yama has specialized in hand-blown glass brewing equipment since 1978 and they've become known for their coffee siphons and cold brew towers. The siphon brewer utilizes a heat source to boil water and push it into an upper brewing chamber, then sucks the coffee down through a cloth filter and back into the bottom chamber. Hands down, it's the most involved and captivating way of making coffee. Similar to the siphon, Yama's cold coffee dripper looks more like lab equipment than a coffee maker. It uses a slow dripping process to brew a strong concoction of coffee that's destined to be served over ice.
Yama Cold Coffee Brewer - 32 oz. is rated 4.75 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from elegant and acidic free We've had the cold coffee system for 2 weeks now, and we love it. My husband prefers iced coffee, but adding ice to hot coffee isn't the same. The coffee from the Yama coffee system is more smooth and not acidic. For me, I am drinking black coffee now and no longer adding creamer. A huge plus is that it looks great in our kitchen. It's elegant and a talking piece when folks come over. It's quite expensive, but we don't buy coffee at brand name places. Also, the glass is well made and the mounting system is beautiful. You pay for what you get, and this is worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is brilliant! I bought this contraption of a coffee maker as a gift for my coworker, I had heard about slow brew cold coffee but had no idea how elaborate this this thing was. Once assembled, some trouble shooting, and some tinkering we were ready to make coffee. Almost 4 hours later with had a 8 cup beaker of coffee. Now came to fun part, taste test. I was not prepared for such a dramatic difference from what I'm used to. We tried it black with a half a teaspoon of brown sugar simple syrup. It was amazing! There was absolutely no acidity or bitterness. It went down almost like a desert drink or after dinner drink. Super smooth, refreshing, flavorful, and different. We finished our coffee and went about our days, crossing paths about 15 minutes later. While I sat outside and caught my bearings, my buddy zipped past me on his bike. He, being a much more avid coffee drinker then myself, looks at me and said "I usually don't get a coffee buzz anymore, but I'm really zazzed up right now." As for myself I was wired about 5 minutes later. The blend of Puerto Rican coffee we drank I had drank several times I. The past. I wasn't jittery or shaky, I was just very very awake. It was wild. I will be ordering one of these for myself in the future. Even the process of making the coffee in this wild gadget is an added bonus on the experience (at least in the beginning) it's a great product any coffee snob should own and experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional Craftsmanship and Excellent Results I recently moved from NYC to Milwaukee for the period of a year and they have a serious lack of good coffee here. So if you are like me and used to a Blue Bottle nearby, this is as close as you can get. It's also--surpisingly--quite stylish. It fits particularly well with a modern style setting. The cold brew it produces is only as good as the knowledge of the brewer and the quality of the beans, however. So you have to experiment to find your own balance. Best I've found thus far is 20 tblspoons (1.25 cups) of coarsely ground beans and 4.22 cups of ice and cold water. So if you just have to have that cold brew flavor, this is a 5/5 in my book. Couple draw backs are the price of the setup (tad bit much if you're not serious about coffee) and the delicacy of the glass parts when cleaning (best way I've found thus far is to soak the pieces in lukewarm water and use your preferred brand of coffee machine cleaner).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful and functional brewing device. I purchased this last month and I have been experimenting with it regularly since then. The system came shipped in its original packaging from Yama and I was able to get it all together within 10 minutes. It sits Due to the simplicity of the design the results of the coffee you brew can vary drastically depending on your amount of coffee, grind, and drip time. I have also been surprised by the change in the coffee after a couple of days in the refrigerator. My only qualm with the unit is that it is time consuming to clean, but you don't buy this for the convenience factor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it Sleek, handsome addition to any kitchen with taste. Works perfectly. Easy to assemble. Ceramic filter that comes with the brewer works just fine. The paper filters (S, 2 3/8 inches) that were recommended as an additional purchase by the website are too big.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality Build and Perfect for home brewing in small batches I bought this a month ago and have used it nearly everyday. Extremely easy to assemble. Maintenance is a breeze besides the ceramic filter which seems to require a bit more scrubbing. Yields a great tasting coffee!

Do I need filtration papers in addition to the machine?

Asked by: Chrisgoodman
This brewer utilizes a circular ceramic filter to separate the grounds from the liquid. A paper filter, included with this unit (CDM-8PF), is rested on top of the coffee bed to ensure even distribution of the droplets of water.

How easy is this to clean i.e. the glass tubing. I have a lot of employee at our coffee house and things some times gets broken. I love the look of this cold brew system a lot better than the toddy system we already have. Thanks Wayne

Asked by: wayneg
The pieces -- especially the coil-- can be fragile. We recommend allowing the pieces to soak in a coffee detergent before rinsing. A pipe cleaner would be sufficient to gently scrub the inside of the coil.

made 2 pots of cold coffee. seems very dilute. second time we used more grounds, still dilute. what am i doing wrong?

Asked by: patty l
It's possible that you're not allowing enough time for the coffee to brew and not enough material is being extracted from the coffee. Try decreasing the drip rate and extending the brew time by a couple hours at a time.
