Take full advantage of your VST or precision espresso baskets with a Pullman Big Step Tamper. The 58.55 mm piston with its patent-pending design gives you clean, edge-to-edge compaction for better extractions and less channeling.

Pullman's Big Step tamper has great heft and balance, and the precisely machined parts exhibit obvious craftsmanship. This is a tool you'll be happy to use every day, and one you'll want to take great care of. The patent-pending piston is designed to snugly fit VST-style ridgeless baskets (58.70 mm diameter or larger), giving you full compaction with little to no residual grounds on the side-walls. That means you're compacting your puck fully and evenly across the entire surface, which greatly helps in reducing edge channeling and donut extractions, and can increase extraction yields. The tapered step in the base design reduces suction while removing the tamper, so dislodged or fractured pucks are much less of an issue.

Big Step bases are made from 630 grade stainless steel, so they're hard enough to stand up to busy bar use - but they're not invincible. It's important to care for your Big Step and protect the base from damage, so it's recommended to store on a soft surface like a rubber tamp stand. Each Big Step tamper includes three handle spacers to adjust the handle height to your preference, and the rubber piston grip helps to ease finger strain throughout the day. We currently carry powder-coated aluminum handle styles only, in a variety of colors. Select the color of your choice from the drop-down menu when adding the product to your cart. Pullman tampers are designed and made in Australia.

Feels custom and feels like a solid build

So I was really really excited to be able to order this for myself (and of course to use at our shop)! I first saw this from Chris Baca (Cat & Cloud) and couldn't wait to get one of my own, especially after all the wonderful things he said about it. The paint job on the handle is beautiful. The weight is nice and heavy. I love it. The shape fits nicely in my palm. These features may not be other folks' cup of tea. The base is nice and flat just how I like. Here's the BUT... So I'm not sure if this is the case for other folks, but using this with a 20g VST basket and the LM bottomless portafilter, and every time I tamp, I'm getting some binding or feel like it's jamming on the walls of the basket. I know Pullman also makes baskets, so are these best ONLY with their VST baskets??? Also, I feel like I'm pretty careful with it, but am starting to notice some light scratches on the base. Is this normal? I'd love to know what everyone else's impressions are. Not quite sure I'd pay the premium for another one... even though I originally wanted to customize my next one.

A big thumbs up for the Pullman Big Step tamper

This tamper works perfectly with my VST baskets. It's amazing how well it compacts the puck, covering its entire surface. It really helps eliminate channeling, which is especially appreciated when one is using a bottomless portafilter.
