Premium Construction, Exceptional Performance

Producing consistently ground coffee over and over again is a tall task for a coffee grinder, but the Comandante C40 MkIII isn’t your average hand mill. It starts with its stainless steel body, axle, crank, and ball bearings for durable construction, and all leads to Comandante’s very own high-nitrogen martensitic steel burrs. The results are pristine coffee grounds that you can rely on, and the care put into the body and burrs of the grinder means that you can trust the C40 MkIII to hold up for years to come.

Black Comandante with Kalita Wave

Beautifully Designed

Don’t let the practical mechanics fool you, this hand grinder doesn’t need you to sacrifice fashion for function. The oak handle is sourced from the Black Forest, and the stainless steel body comes wrapped in a wood veneer available in six striking styles—Wenge, Bamboo, Red Sonja, American Cherry, Black, and Zebra. Add your choice of clear or brown glass grinds catch to the mix and you’ve got a grinder worth displaying proudly in any environment.

Black Comandante with Acaia Pearl

A Hand Grinder For Any Need

With a wide range of grind settings available you can trust the C40 MkIII to perform for Turkish coffee, cold brew, and everything in between. Thanks to its stepped grind adjustment you can also be certain that once you find a setting you love you’ll be able to go back to it whenever you’d like.

Grinds so consistent! The coffee I make every morning with my Chemex tastes even better! Worth the investment.

Regina A. –Verified Buyer

The body of the grinder fits comfortably in the hand, I wear a size large glove for reference, and the ball bearing in the grindshaft allows very smooth turning of the handle. The stepped adjustment mechanism works well and I haven't had any issues thus far with it going out of its setting.

Michael B. –Verified Buyer

This grinder seems to be very solidly built (heavier than I expected) and produces very evenly ground coffee. I usually make pour-over coffee, and it only takes 30 seconds or so to grind the beans I need for a cup.

It is, what I thought it was

This is my first Hand/burr grinder, but so far this things performs like a champ! Easy adjustability, consistent grinds, and very sturdy. It’s has some weight to it, but it makes it feel more durable and secure when using. I normally brew pour over or Aero, with the occasional Moka pot, and I’ve been able to dial in great cups consistently. No regrets here

Buy once, cry once, worth it.

Obviously a steep price but if you use it every day it'll be worth it, especially given the advertised longevity. I was upgrading to the Comandante from a baratza encore that I upgraded manually with the virtuoso burrs. I immediately noticed a more consistent grind and getting more from cups. The cups I under or over extract a bit are still great and even one click of a grind adjustment is noticeable. Has made dialing in coffees a more straightforward process. I wish there was an obvious and labeled true 0. If I was switching between brewers/coffees frequently I think it would be tough to keep track of how many clicks for each one. There are a lot of support videos online to help and so far why questions I've had have been clearly answered in a video, including their version of true zero. Great product and I'm glad I sprung for it.

Gun-like build quality and great details

I say gun-like partially because this feels as heavy as a pistol when you hold it. The performance is beastly and the aesthetics match. My brain said I should go with the black one but I’m glad I got the wood veneer. They didn’t take any shortcuts with that finish. Smooth and authentic.

Don't bother with any sub $200 hand or electric grinder - the Comandante outshines them all. V60 brews are so clear and delightful. I like this grinder better than 95% of my extended family members.

High quality, easy to get good results

This grinder seems to be very solidly built (heavier than I expected) and produces very evenly ground coffee. I usually make pour-over coffee, and it only takes 30 seconds or so to grind the beans I need for a cup. I used to use a Hario hand grinder, and there is no comparison between the two in terms of grind quality, this is probably the best results I've ever gotten from any grinder I've owned so far.

Impressed!

I am newer to the home grind game but I would highly recommend this. Price is steep, sure but as a longer term investment for home coffee and travel if you want, I would say its well worth it. Many many grind sizes incrementing as small as you'd like. Already noticing improvement from having my local roaster grind it.

Great Grinder

Since my huge Bunn grinder (bought used at an antique store about 5 years ago) is in storage after a move, I needed a hand grinder. After much online research, I narrowed my choice to two grinders. Prima was great in answering my questions via chat, so I purchased the Comandante C40 MKIII. The Wenge style was not in stock, so I chose the Zebra - beautiful. The grinder is solid, and the tactile and audible feedback to the hands and ears of grinding the beans is enjoyable. I have small hands, so, yes, if grinding for more than one cup, I will brace the device against chest from time to time. Of course, it will develop my grip strength in my left hand over time! I have had the grinder for about three weeks (this is my first hand grinder), and so far, no complaints. And it is not made in Communist China! Yay!!! It is worth the money! I bought a Comandante Barista Brush #4 from another vendor - wish Prima carried some of these Comandante accessories because the brush is excellent for removing the clinging grinds from the bottom of the grinder. Prima provides great customer service!

Fantastic Grinder

Having been hesitant at first to buy a hand grinder when I perfectly good working Encore. I was pleasantly surprised to the superior grind quality over the electric. I still use the encore for large batches like cold brew but when it’s just 1-2 servings I go to the Comadante first.

Solid

I was having grinder trouble with some of my coffees. Couldn’t figure out which way to take my grinding, as coffee was both sour, weak, and bitter. This grinder solved that problem, leading to coffee that clearly needs to be more coarse, fine, or is just right. It also grinds coffee extremely fast, which I didn’t think would happen. I can easily grind through 20grams if beans at a casual pace within a minute. I kind of wish the glass was hard plastic or a different material, but it works just fine.

The Comandante C40 is a Well-Built Precision Machine

I love the Comandante C40, it is a rugged and well-built machine, and you can feel the build quality as soon as you pick it up. The C40 is a smooth operator, and it grinds coffee with relative ease efficiently, cutting the beans into very uniform grinds culminating in a great cup of coffee from my AeroPress. The C40 may seem expensive, but if you love coffee, this grinder is worth every penny.

Worth it.

Very impressed with the overall quality and performance of this grinder. Grind consistency has been excellent, both with finer settings used for a Moka pot or coarser grinds for my Chemex. The body of the grinder fits comfortably in the hand (I wear a size large glove for reference), and the ball bearing in the grindshaft allows very smooth turning of the handle. The stepped adjustment mechanism works well and I haven't had any issues thus far with it going out of its setting. Is this grinder expensive? Yeah. But if you want a solidly built grinder that has excellent performance, you can't go wrong with this one.

The Last Grinder You'll Ever Need

I have slowly worked my way up the grinder food chain until I arrived here, so I have a pretty good idea of how only changing your grinder can improve and alter your cup of coffee. I started with a spice grinder, which had tons of static issues, and really crazy variation from the smallest pieces to the largest in a grind. Then I tried a low end hand grinder (Kalita), and while I enjoyed the lack of electricity needed it still seemed I was leaving some extraction on the table. I have used the Commandante for 3 weeks now and made about 15 cups with it. My experience has been great even with slightly older beans, I'm very happy with the consistency of the grinder and the smoothness of the burrs. The inclusion of 2 grind canisters makes the operation in the morning seamless. It takes me about 150 revolutions to grind 30 grams of coffee in the morning.

Great grinding

Should I care that my co-workers said that I am "more hipster" because I got a hand grinder? I don't think so. The grinder works great. On the smallest grind setting, it takes a while to get a few grams, but unless you're making turkish coffee, I don't think you'll need that setting.

Very solid grinder

Having used several high end hand grinders, I feel like this is my favorite. At this price range, grind quality is going to be similar between models, but the C40 has some very nice quality of life features. Adjusting the grind setting is super easy, there is no need to play with the alignment after cleaning, cleaning is extremely easy and really only requires a brush, and the grinding experience is fast and smooth. The thing also looks beautiful. My only real complaint is the glass catch jar seems sketchy, as in I'm afraid I'm going to drop it. That being said it is very thick and could probably take some serious knocks, but I don't want to find out. The other issue I had was the little magnet on the handle popped out, but it was nothing a little super glue couldn't fix. Overall, this is easily the best grinder I have used in my experience.

Top of the line

Worth every penny. It’s hard to find a consistent grinder with longevity. I travel a lot and use my hand grinders often. After going through three different grinders (varied brands and prices), I can stop looking. Especially in the hand grinder market, the sacrifice for quality reaches quite high but stops with this piece. Great packaging, quick shipping.

Quality and Performance!

This is a really well built grinder. Grind adjustment feels solid. I really like how the handle attaches to the top. No play in the burr assembly at all while grinding. The wood of both the body and the pommel feel nice in the hand. Grind quality and consistency is indeed exceptional! If I had to nit pick, I'd say that the pommel on mine has a slight squeak when turning, although this could probably be easily remedied. The pommel spins really nicely though. I talked with the Prima folks on the phone as I was waffling between this one and the Helor 101 - they gave some great info/advice and I'm extremely happy with my choice! I love this grinder. It is quite expensive, but you get what you pay for!

Decent grinder

First time using a hand grinder and it made all the difference to my home brewing adventure. Shots can be varied and crema is amazing compared to the cheap electric grinder I was using that never went fine enough. Although if making more than a few cups, the hand does get a little tired from gripping hard, as the surface material is immaculately polished. Needs your own cleaning brush and maybe a nice small bag to keep when not in use. Highly recommended!

Great size in the hand and I found in easy to grind. The lid prevents popouts and it’s EASY to clean. Perfect adjustment for all but fine tuning espresso grind ( although I know there’s an upgraded drive shaft that double the ‘clicks). Perfect for Pour Overs

Thanks, Prima for quick shipping and for carrying this (consistently) in the US. The grinder: I opened the box, unwrapped this beast and just held it for a bit. It feels incredible in hand - heavy, smooth, perfectly proportioned for people with medium/ large sized hands. The adjustment mechanism is nice and the clicks feel secure/ substantial. I found a nice setting for pour over and gave it a shot. Preface, I own a Made by Knock Feldgrind 2 (from Prima). While it is OKAY for pour overs (it shines with espresso), it is no match for the Comandante. I sipped my first V60 from this grinder and was shocked by how much flavor clarity I was getting. With the feld, I was always getting a slightly savory, call it "off", flavor, which in my estimation was due to fines. With this, I'm not getting any of that whatsoever. The grind is even with surprisingly few boulders. I've been using it for 2 weeks and am thoroughly impressed. It's easy to use, beautiful to look at, and makes me want to make more coffee in a day than I probably should. I'm a proud owner!

Great; so far not perfect.

I'm really happy with the Comandante so far. It is so superior to my previous grinder. It grinds much more quickly, and produces substantially more even grounds, even with the coarser settings (which was where my previous grinder struggled). However it is not perfect. I was surprised to see fines clinging to the sides of my V60 filters. For $250 I was expecting very little fines, but I still see a considerable amount. Granted, it is much better than my Hair. Maybe I am doing something wrong? I will contact customer support and report back soon.

The most uniform grinds I’ve ever seen

Comandante grinder....have gotten it pretty much dialed in after three days of fiddling around. 27 clicks for Chemex seems to suit my recipe best. Grinds are incredibly uniform, much more consistent than the Baratza Virtuouso + I was using. Build is very solid. I don’t understand the criticism regarding the plastic parts....in my opinion this thing is built to last for many years which is pretty much all I expect from a hand grinder. Definitely upped my home coffee game.

Satisfied Customer!

I own a cheap electric grinder. I decided to buy this high-end hand grinder to see what the fuss is about. It is expensive. I believe owning 2 electric grinders would be stupid of me so I decided why not. After brewing my first batch with the Comandante i was surprised on the clarity. I might be stupid enough to buy another one for office brews and keep this one for home brews. This Zebra model is so sexy that waking up in the morning to make breakfast with her is considered cheating. :) sorry babe!

WOW

Yes wow, the very first cup right off the bat as soon as it was delivered, it was intelligentsia kenya. Recently buying and trying out Vario w with steel burrs as well as Lido 3, I can say with confide this is far better and it was easily seen in quality of cup. I returned both Vario n Lido3, keeping Comandante C40. The handle is so nice, grinding so easy with little effort. The grind timing is longer as compared to Lido but the quality and comfort and feeling is so good that makes every penny worth. I definitely recommend it.

Stunning Grinder

I got into coffee about a year ago... Purchased pre-ground due to its grind consistency... Purchased a cheap $30 hand grinder in order to try some local freshly roasted beans, and the taste was good but there was always something off about it, the mouthfeel, the inconsistent extraction, which can't be masked by good flavor. Flash to last week when I ordered a Lido and decided to return it because I didn't enjoy the feel of it and also due to further research online regarding grind consistency. The C40 is almost unanimously rated as the top manual grinder regarding grind consistency and the amount of fines it produces. I personally do not brew espresso at home, otherwise there's a chance I wouldn't have gotten this grinder and probably would've opted for a Kinu which I may in the future... For my brew methods (Aeropress, V60, Chemex, bee house, occasionally a Moka pot and more rarely a French press, this grinder is perfect, there is nothing like the feeling of grinding, the grind consistency, build quality, heft, it's all phenomenal. The clicks are solid and it's quick and easy to set with the Red Clix add on for extra precision if you want it. The main aspects of the grinder were built to last for a lifetime and you can easily buy replacement parts online if needed should you break the most fragile parts (the lid connected to the grinding arm, the glass jar). Excellent quality and a decent price when you consider it a grinder for life.

Smooth as butter

I don't have a whole lot of experience with other manual grinders and nothing else in this price range, so take my review with that in mind. I have a Hario Skerton pro which works fine but is very slow, and a porlex mini grinder that I use at work that I like better than the Skerton as it's faster. I was reluctant to spend this much on a grinder to replace the skerton at home. I'm glad I did. This grinds quite a bit faster than the skerton, the grind selection is intuitive, the grind is consistent, the materials are excellent, the wood handle is very ergonomic, the size is reasonably space efficient. What's harder to quantify is, when you grind with this, it just has these feeling of quality, it's hard to explain how smooth it is compared to my other grinders it just feels like a precision piece of engineering. Does that "feeling" really matter? Objectively, probably not, but it's just a very satisfying contraption to use, hand grinding with the Skerton was a chore that had me considering moving to an electric grinder for home use, with this beauty hand grinding is a pleasure, it's just a satisfying part of the morning routine now.
