    Excellent grinder

First of all, props to Prima for carrying all white versions of the K30 - it looks spectacular. I have been using this grinder in my home (with a Linea Mini) for 2 weeks now and am fully satisfied. I am unsurprised as I am also the happy owner of a Baratza Vario, with burrs also designed by Mahlkonig. This grinder is essentially plug-and-play - I was able to dial in my first coffee within 4 or so shots and get absolutely consistent shots with no outliers due to anything concerning the grinder (read: operator error). I have not experienced the need or desire to "season" the burrs, as some do with other grinders. Adjusting the dose is terribly easy via the potentiometers. Adjusting the portafilter holder takes a little bit of finesse but is also very easy. Grinding at about 5-6g/s, and only adjustable in increments of .1s, I found that I have to keep a small reserve (~.5-1.0g) of coffee on the side to weigh and adjust my doses to the exact weight I desire. This should not be seen as a detrimental feature of the grinder - grinding by time, and with a quick, commercial grinder, is by-design not 100% accurate. I have found, though, that the dose is always within .3g once the chamber/chute is full of coffee. Grind quality is fluffy and any clumps break up with tapping/tamping. I purge 1-1.5s (~5-8g) before I pull my first shot after the grinder has sat for a while and I have not noticed any decrease in shot quality. One feature I really like about this grinder is how sturdy the hopper is - built like a tank and locks in extremely securely (my shop's Robur hopper isn't as nice). I haven't felt the need/desire to open it up and clean it yet, but videos I've seen show that it's fairly simple. Whenever I switch coffees (which I've done twice now), I find it easy to remove the hopper and vacuum out the chute completely. One small nitpick - when adjusting the collar for the grind size, I have found that it takes enough force to initiate the movement that the collar moves about 5mm on the initial push of the adjustment "tab" which can create more of an adjustment than I may want sometimes. I've had to use my pinky fingers and both hands to steady the collar to adjust it in minute increments.

Great upgrade from the Baratza Vario

The grind is very consistent. And it's super fast and quiet! 20 grams of coffee takes just 4 seconds. And who says you can not do a single dosing on it due to the retention of the coffee. I tried putting 20 grams and used manual, it came out 19.9 (it takes slightly longer time but eventually almost everything I put in came out). Of course I will still use for more than single dosing but good to know that it's an option. I tried a few comparison from my Bararza Vario. The difference is huge. Same bean tasted clearly better. Makes me realize that a grinder makes more difference than an espresso machine, just like a lens makes more difference than a camera. A happy upgrade to me! The only con maybe the size though. Be prepare to reserve a big space for it if you are getting one. It's even bigger than it looks in the picture. But it's good to know I'm getting a very solid machine that could last a while.

I want to rate it 5 stars, but...

The grinder, itself, and Prima's service deserve 5 stars. But I'm disappointed that the only hopper option is the full-size, tall hopper. I understand that most buyers are probably commercial shops and need the tall hopper but as Mahlkonig and distributors market it more and more to home users, making the short hopper available as a replacement at no additional cost (currently its a $100+ add) makes more sense to me. I already spent $1,700 and don't feel I should have to spend more to get the small hopper and throw away the tall one. But, again, the grinder is excellent. The setup was super simple and the upgrade from my previous Baratza Preciso is definitely a very noticeable change in extraction quality. And its super quiet and super quick. Prima provides excellent service and response. The shopping experience was great!
