Small Footprint, Big Upgrades
The Silvia Pro is a compact home espresso machine with cafe-quality performance that takes up less counter space than the average microwave. Inside the deceptively small stainless steel shell, Rancilio has managed to fit two boilers: one for steam (1 liter) and another dedicated to brew water (.3 liter) making it possible to prepare espresso and milk at the same time. In addition, the Pro includes a PID controller in each boiler to ensure temperature stability and accuracy, and a 2-liter water reservoir to deliver fresh water to the boilers.
Just four buttons grace the face of the machine, all of which perform the function implied by their simple icon, but this is not a simple machine. The digital display is the gateway to the menu, which holds sophisticated customizations like automatic shut-off and wake-up times, brew and steam boiler temperatures, and temperature measurement unit (F or C). Plus, when an espresso is being brewed, the display screen functions as a shot timer.
The most convenient feature in the menu is the automatic cleaning function. While not entirely automated—someone needs to remove and insert the portafilter at set intervals—all the tedious counting and button pressing has been taken care of by Rancilio. Just navigate to F.01 in the menu, press go, and the three stages of cleaning will begin. A less impactful but still welcome feature is the adjustable drip tray, which can be raised or lowered to three predetermined heights in order to accommodate most mugs or demitasse. To overcome hard water, Rancilio has included one pack of softener that should last up to two months.
